Twists and Braids

Directions for Three Strand Braid

The diagrams below show in detail how to thread the cards and how to weave the three strand braid. The setup is for the 2-pack system. All cards are Z-threaded [1]. The first row marked as "Top - Warp" represents the hole near the warp, the second row represents the hole near the fell.

Cards in first pack:    1 9 10 19

Cards in second pack:   2 3 4 5 6 7 8 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 20

The pattern repeats after eight rows. Below are two different representations of the same draft. Small arrows in the draft on the left show users of the 2-pack system where to shift cards. The representation on the right uses shading to indicate forward and backward turns. Dark shading means cards are turned backwards.

[1] Since two definitions of S- and Z-threading exist we need to clarify that the setup assumes that the threads form the Z-slant as defined in Peter Collingwood's "The Techniques of Tablet Weaving".
